23rd January, 2012.

Dear Parents,

We have all settled back and are looking forward to a busy term ahead. This term we will have the official opening of our new school extension and refurbishment programme, so there's lots to get organised for same. We have many other interesting activities going on also.

DRUMMING WORKSHOPS:
All classes will participate in percussion workshops this week. We ask for a nominal charge of €2 to cover this activity, which can be sent to your child's class teacher before Wednesday.

VIKING WORKSHOPS:
Our three 4th classes enjoyed a visit from "Eric the Viking" last week. These informative and fun sessions were kindly sponsored by the Parents and Friends' Committee. The classes will work again with "Eric the Viking" to make a large model of a Viking village.

SEINN CELEBRATION:
Our 5th classes have been busy practising for a choral celebration which will take place in St. Patrick's Cathedral on Tuesday 31st January. The event, which will involve pupils from all local schools is being celebrated to launch "Catholic Schools Week".

CLOTHING/INK CARTRIDGE/MOBILE PHONE COLLECTION:
Our Parents & Friends' Committee have organised a collection on Thursday 2nd February to raise funds for our school. Our last collection raised €225 in cash and a voucher for €650 for computer equipment. Please help to make this collection a success also. The following items are all acceptable.

Clothing: Clothes, Belts, Shoes, Handbags, Curtains, Bed clothes (no quilts).
Mobile Phones: May be broken, but must include battery.
Ink Cartridge: All types. You may be able to source these from work also.
Please pack the clothing, ink cartridges and mobile phones in separate bags. The school gates will be open from 8 a.m. to facilitate parents who wish to drop off bags before going to work.

SCHOOL PHOTOGRAPHS:
Your child received individual, class or family photographs last week. Completed orders must be returned to the school by Friday 27th January. There is, of course, no obligation on parents to purchase same.

ABSENCE NOTES:
If your child is absent from school there is no need to telephone the school. Parents of pupils in the Infant classes can tell the class teacher the reason for absence on the morning the child returns to school. Our school is obliged to contact the NEWB (National Education Welfare Board) if a pupil misses more than 20 days in a school year. Parents of pupils in 1st - 6th class should complete the absence note in your child's homework notebook and this can be presented to the class teacher when your child returns to school.

SPELLING BEE:
Our school will participate in the Eason's Spelling Bee competition in the near future. Well done to Siofra McCrum, Amy Kelly and Hannah Donnelly who have been working very hard in preparation for this event. After a nail biting internal school competition Hannah was victorious and will represent our school in the Louth Finals in the near future. We wish her all the best and know she will represent our school very well.

INTER-GENERATIONAL PROJECT:
Mr. Ford's 5th class visited St. Oliver's Hospital to-day and painted laundry bags with the elderly patients. We are very grateful to the parents who accompany us on each visit to help with the activities. If you have any unwanted Christmas gifts at home which we could use as prizes/treats for the elderly please send them in to me at my office. These treats and prizes mean so much to the elderly.

EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES:
A number of parents of pupils in the junior classes have expressed an interest in after school art classes. If your child is in infants or 1st class and is interested in such a class please contact Shauna Swords on 0879533327.

Thank you to Mr. Geoghegan who continues with his chess club and to Mr. Lyons who has recently setup up a cross country running club.

MIDTERM BREAK:
Our midterm break is Thursday 16th and Friday 17th February. All our school closures can be accessed on our school website www.bayestatens.ie Check our most recent activities and see photos of our Christmas Shows on our website also.

Kind regards.
