Dear Parents,
As the nation awaits the details of the budget, we will instead celebrate the achievements of our pupils and focus on the good news within our school.
CHRISTMAS FAIR: Our Christmas Fair was a huge success. Thank you to all our pupils and parents who donated items so generously for all our stalls. We are grateful to all our sponsors who gave prizes willingly for our raffles/lucky dips. A special word of thanks to Ms Kirk and her 4th class pupils who entertained the crowds outside with their beautiful carol-singing. Thank you to our past pupils, parents and staff who all worked so hard on the night to make our fair such a great success. Finally, to our very hard working Parents & Friends Committee who has been working towards the Fair over the past few weeks, I want to say a HUGE THANK YOU. To celebrate the success of our Fair and to reward pupils and parents for their efforts we will have NO WRITTEN HOMEWORK TONIGHT.
Next year we hope to hold a bigger and better Fair !!!

SCHOOL CLOSURES: Thursday 8th December (Church Holiday)
Friday 9th December (School holiday)

BOOK FAIR: Our annual Scholastic Book Fair takes place this week. Your child’s class has been allocated a particular time to visit the Fair. However if this time does not suit you, please feel free to call in to the school at another time to visit the Fair with your child. Our school will receive a percentage of the sales, in books, for our new school library. Thanks to the Parents & Friends Committee who will organise the Fair over the next few days.

PRIZE WINNERS: Congratulations to our young artists who have won prizes in local competitions.
Credit Union Poster Competition: Our pupils won 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes in the Under 7 section. What a great achievement. Well done to Megan Dunne (1st), Jade Ayres (2nd) and Anna Markey (3rd).

In the 8-11 years section we kept the Muire na nGael flag flying again, claiming first & second prize. Well done to Nicole Duffy (1st) and Kyle Watters (2nd). All our prize winners will receive their prizes at a ceremony in Cuchulainn Credit Union on Friday 9th December.
As Megan and Nicole were first prize winners in their sections, their pictures will now go forward to the next level of the competition. Best of luck girls!

Amnesty International Poster Competition: Once again, Nicole Duffy’ was among the prizewinners in this competition. Nicole was the overall winner, from all the local primary schools, in the Best Slogan Competition and will receive her prize at a presentation in the County Museum tonight Monday 5th December. Well done Nicole.

HURLING BLITZ: Mr Mullen’s 4th class boys participated in a non competitive hurling blitz organised by Cumann na mBunscol recently. They performed very well and played matches against five other local schools. Two of our 5th class pupils also acted as “Young Whistlers” ( referees) for the event. Well done to all.

SOCCER BLITZ: Mr Lyon’s 3rd class participated in a soccer blitz in Oriel Park recently and some emerging soccer talent was spotted. The blitz was organised by Dundalk FC who have coached our 3rd & 4th classes during the term.

ATHLETICS PROGRAMME: Our School has been invited to participate in a pilot programme to introduce athletics to our students. Our 3rd & 4th classes are currently partaking in athletics coaching with Triona Faapito.
A number of our students will be selected to represent the school in the regional finals in Athlone in March. We are grateful to Triona for giving our pupils this opportunity and for sharing her expertise with our teachers.

CAROL SINGING: Our school has been invited to send carol singers to Dundalk Stadium over the next two weekends to entertain the punters and to bring some Christmas spirit to the Stadium. Ms Kirk’s class and our 5th & 6th class pupils will perform over four nights and will raise money towards our schools Inter-generational Project with St Oliver’s Hospital. Every 3 weeks Mr Ford’s class visit the elderly in St Olivers and organise activities for the patients and day care personnel. The money raised will help to cover the cost of transport, prizes and Christmas gifts for the elderly. We would be delighted to have some adult support with us on these nights.

CHRISTMAS ACTIVITIES: Many of our classes are busy preparing their Christmas Shows. Our junior infants will perform for their families and friends on Monday 19th December while Ms Mc Donnell’s Senior Infants and Ms Mc Donnell’s 2nd Class will perform on Tuesday 20th December. All shows will take place in the evening time and parents will be contacted in advance by the class teachers.

TV APPEARANCE: Ms Mc Donnell’s 2nd class was recently invited to partake in a TV show for the Discovery Channel. The show was featuring our past pupil and local magician Brendan Lambe, and Brendan kindly invited the class to be his audience for his show. A number of the children were interviewed and assisted Brendan with his tricks during the performance. We will let you know when the show is due to be broadcast.

PARENT TEACHER MEETINGS: As parents I encourage you to take on board the advice given to you by our teachers at the recent parent teacher meetings. If you wish to discuss your child’s progress again at a later date, kindly make an appointment with the teacher, at a time that is convenient for you as parents and for the teacher. This will allow us to arrange supervision cover for the class while the teacher is meeting with you.

MONSTER DRAW: Thank you to all who supported our Parents & Friends’ Monster Draw. It was a great success and monies raised will be used to purchase books and furniture for our new school library.

Kind Regards,

Martina Rafferty
